I for one don't see anything much wrong with HFCS. It has less fructose per gram than, say, honey. Too much sugar in general is obviously a problem.

I am not certain when corn became the main culprit in feeding the world. As of today, 2% of American's are correlated towards the agricultural sector. 0.5% of those people are what make up production agriculture, i.e. farmers, ranchers and the like. ONE of these producers feeds approximately 26 mouths over seas. Remember, America is the bread basket of the world and we did not get that way from a lack of effort. We feed the world, we feed ourselves, it just so happens that corn is the only commodity which has the capability to carry this burden. Corn is not the problem, a lack of TRUE UNDERSTANDING is.

It is possible to largely avoid HFCS, but not if you want to eat the most popular brands of commercially-prepared products. I've only found one brand of commercial (non-health food store) barbeque sauce that isn't mostly HFCS, for instance.

Hi Carl, came over from sff.net ng. I've been aware of the corn-go-round for several years, and tried hard to serve healthier foods, foods without high-fructose corn syrup, etc. I stopped trying. Reading every label was a pain, especially when sometimes there were NO "healthy" foods available in a given category. Very frustrating.

Sounds like a very interesting book. I've been thinking about industrial agriculture for a while, particularly the government's love affair with corn, so this book should be a nice addition to my reading.
