I've invested some serious money in Java books, but honestly I've never gotten past Chapter 2 of any of the above. Some of them are so old they don't apply to current versions of Java. I have been failing to make the necessary effort for quite a few years now.
I just finished a Java tutorial, and I'm going to dive in again. I pulled out my odd library of unfinished books ... but the newest of them is only 11 years old. Now I have to do research to figure out if it's so obsolete I'm better off ignoring it.
Oh well.
